      <image:title>videos - Discorporate Hierarchies#3</image:title>
      <image:caption>In this video essay I am concerned with how my microbiome helps me process the onslaught of popular culture, transforming it into simple organic information packets that can be reassembled in more meaningful ways... It is one continuous take of experimentation, as I tested a new video feedback diorama I had just finished building. No editing or aftereffects are used, except for the titling. There is one layer of video synthesis and three layers of camera-to-screen feedback that interact with each other in semi-random, generative ways. Figurines placed in the feedback loops become the actors in an abstract narrative, spinning in their inverted hierarchy...</image:caption>

      <image:title>videos - Between Grief and Ecstasy</image:title>
      <image:caption>This video essay took shape during a time when I was talking with friends about the state of mind necessary for one be able to hold grief and ecstasy simultaneously, while taking out the trash, doing the dishes, preparing for the anthropocene... It's a life long project of mine, keeping a foot in either realm as consistently as possible... This piece contains little editing and no aftereffects because I mean it to be as representative of my live performance as possible. The piece is a direct capture of my improvisation with the video systems I have built. The colorful striped motif is generated by an LZX Industries video synthesis system, while the fine textured pattern behind is generated by a lumia setup. Cameras are pointing at a piece of glass art made by the artist Allison Holt, Oilly Oowen Studios. It is a cube filled with perfectly ordered rows of tiny air bubbles, it's sides polished to transparency. It sits on a rotating turntable, in a video feedback diorama I made.</image:caption>

      <image:title>videos - I Dream of Electric Fungus</image:title>
      <image:caption>This experimental short was taken by direct capture from a studio session that took place in January 2019. It is all one clip, mostly analog, and contains no editing or after effects, except for the titling. As I created this I very much enjoyed it's slow, meditative pace, and its moving Rorschach effect, (why I love studio time). The texture that flows down screen is derived from a video loop I shot of a log covered with orange fungus. The clip was sent through a video synthesis system that electrified it, hence the title. The video utilizes a video synthesis system that I have tuned to be interactive with sound. The sound is also synthesized, using two random pattern generators to vary frequency and rhythm. So I was improvising in both the audio and visual elements simultaneously. Because of the random interactions between sound and video, many unpredictable images unfolded.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This video was filmed in a video feedback environment I built. Its core element is a video loop of a spiritual site in Southern India called 1000 steps. Over and under this I have keyed in video synthesis and feedback. It is mostly one continuous clip, with little editing and no after-effects applied. I mean it to be as performative as possible, because working live, in an expanded cinema format is my goal. The sound is a collage of field recordings that came from several sights in India, and includes sounds of my friends the cicadas, and groups of kids demonstrating to save the local forests.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This video short is a Neo-Brutalist essay on contemporary life in the USA. I reserve my creators prerogative to say as little as I like about this piece, save that it reflects the most current events in the USA in a personal and emotional way. As to the technical process, it was filmed in a video feedback environment I built. Its core element is a sculpture of a cage that I made, which measures about 9 inches square. Over this I have keyed in synthesized video clips of graffiti and a trip across the Bay Bridge. It is mostly one continuous clip, with little editing and no after-effects applied. I mean it to be as performative as possible, because working live, in an expanded cinema format is my goal.</image:caption>

      <image:title>videos - found you floating</image:title>
      <image:caption>This video is an excerpt of a studio session I did using clips and techniques from our show at Grey Area Art and Technology, San Francisco, in May 2016. It is one uninterrupted clip captured with a Canon DSLR, (sorry about the grid artifact! But I don't mine it too much). The DSLR was capturing a Samsung digital signage screen that was displaying the two channels coming from my video feedback and synth system. The Samsung screen can show the two channels at once using it's Picture By Picture capability. Sound is from a two armed turntable I built that is playing a record twice, and in reverse, at a slow RMP. The turntable is variable speed from 0 to 100 RPM and is reversible... The two tonearms give it a very variable echo effect.</image:caption>

      <image:title>videos - For Michael B.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This experimental video short is dedicated to my friend Michael B. and is resonant with our conversations about racism in America. The video was shot in my latest Video Feedback Environment, (VFE), which I built in May, 2015. The VFE animates sculpture through the use of robotics, and creates spontaneous visual occurrences in the form of fractals, patterns, strobing, and color generation. No after effects were used in this video. It is all live generation and synthesis. The face on the rotating head was cast live from my friend, Mike B.’s face, with classical techniques of mask-making, using plaster, latex and moulage. The final form is a fiberglass re-enforced epoxy material that has powdered pigments added for coloration. It is hung on an armature of aluminum robotics parts, toys, and electronics. The third eye was carved into the mask after the final resin form was cast. The actual third eye behind the face consists of a high resolution, color, closed circuit camera that delivers a continuous signal to the video screens behind it, creating one of three video feedback loops in the VFE. The other two feedback loops are derived from two cameras mounted in front of the VFE. They can rotate along their lens axis, which add layers of pattern and movement. In between the signal path from the cameras to the screens is a video synthesis array that can enhance and distort the signals in many ways. The VFE is designed to perform live, in an expanded cinema capacity.  </image:caption>

      <image:caption>This vid was shot in a video feedback environment I built. I constructed a miniature stage that has 7 rotating platforms in its floor which animate the props and sculptures I place on them. Three LCD screens form the backdrop behind the stage. They are looped to two robotic cameras that spin along their lens axis. The cameras capture the HD images which then go to FCPX where some layering takes place. <image:caption>This video will be built into my sculpture entitled My Happy Place. Though it was designed for the sculpture, this video is free to stand on its own three feet. It was shot using a video feedback environment and kinetic sculpture I've been tinkering with. The kinetic sculpture animates the Talking Head and other props, tulips and veggies in this case. The feedback environment recycles and refracts video signals from three sources; a Canon XH-A1 HD camera, a closed circuit camera rotator devise that I built, and a media player, combining them in various ways...</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This piece of video art is filmed in a video feedback environment I made using three LED screens and a Canon XHA1 camera. All other materials are from thrift stores and yard sales. No animals were harmed in its creation...I cast the talking head of bees wax and spare change from a plaster sculpture I made. Political/ media satire plays heavy in the concept. But where else can a prom queen who's hair is falling out, (from chemo?), and a dude with an alligator head feel free to be themselves? A couple audio clips by the performance group, National Disgrace make the sound track. National Disgrace is; Fred Rinne, Andy DeGiovanni and myself.</image:caption>

It is a turntable powered by a record player which also provides the sound track. Thanks to the Center For Creative Reuse in Oakland for carrying a huge selection of vinyl: Motown's Disco Hits, The Tiajuana Brass and something else who's label was eaten off by mold and fungus....are featured. This video is part of the sculpture A Better World, where it runs as a continuous loop, or this video can stand alone as its own video art piece. 2012; 3:36 loop.</image:caption>

The viewer must peek through the windows to see the video inside. I used stucco, marble, copper, wood, brass, and the electronics, (screen, media player, amplifier, speaker), to make this piece. The voyeuristic, tweenage, suburban experience of peering through neighbor's windows at dinner time provided some inspiration. You can see the video loop House Party 2 in the video gallery.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This is video documentation of a wall hanging sculpture. The sculpture has a video screen, media player, amplifier, speaker, and LED built into it. The video that is playing through the backpack screen is a 2.5 min loop of myself out in the world as a free white man. The themes are freedom, incarceration, white privilege, the new jim crow and maintaining mindfulness....It is a mixed media piece using stucco, concrete, steel, wood, paper, paint, and the electronics. The Cafe Art miniature paintings should run straight out in a row to get as much physical distance as possible from the prison, but I didn't have enough room and had to stack them.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This video is documentation of a new wall hanging sculpture. The piece has a video screen, media player, cc video camera and an arduino microprocessor built into it. The media player loops my video A Better Place 2 while the microprocessor interrupts the loop with video samples from the cc camera mounted inside the lower prison section. The sculpture is made of mixed media including stucco, steel, brass, sheet metal, granite. cloth, etc. The fragment of floor construction in the upper museum section is a model of the black and grey granite floor in SFMOMA. Utopia versus dystopia, institutionalized racism, and the racially lopsided demographics of the art scene are concepts that fester in this piece. The video loop A Better Place 2 is viewable on it's own, in the video gallery.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>
iPod Theater is a reflection upon the multiple states of interactive relationships - monological and dialogical. Two screens sit next to one another, embedded into the frames of two chairs in the setting of a beautifully hand-crafted, mini theater setting. The screens are in dialogue that is an assembly of random events filmed by the artist over the course of several months. The emphasis is on the moments that are devoid of media intervention. There is a neutral third screen present in this work, featuring a live feed coming from an isolated location, which can be regarded as an interference, background noise, or a crucial component to the video dialogue.
   </image:caption>

      <image:caption>How do we filter and absorb the onslaught of information delivered to us via the media? How do we balance ourselves with so much of our reality given to us in an abstract form? Pedal away into oblivion on this interactive installation made of recycled and reused materials, reflecting the regurgitated content in the media that we have seen before, but in a slightly different form; the same news, toothpaste, and pop stars cycle back through our lives looking a little different each time, trying to grab our attention, time and money. Utilizing four video sources that show alternately through two TVs, two viewers must pedal stationary bikes in order to change the video sources and spin the TVs. Why not burn some calories while having an aesthetic experience?
  </image:caption>

      <image:title>performances, installations, and proposals - AAFF2020 live stream, American Progress</image:title>
      <image:caption>I submitted the title, A Concise History of American Progress to the Ann Arbor Film Festival months before having developed all the elements involved here. In the mean time, Woody Vasulka passed away. So part of the inspiration for this piece comes from his work, The Art of Memory, which my partner and I were able to watch at the Video Data Bank here in Chicago. We were struck by the similarities it has with Walter Benjamin's 1940 essay, On the Concept of History: "There is a painting by Klee called Angelus Novus. An angel is depicted there who looks as though he were about to distance himself from something which he is staring at. His eyes are opened wide, his mouth stands open and his wings are outstretched. The Angel of History must look just so. His face is turned towards the past. Where we see the appearance of a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe, which unceasingly piles rubble on top of rubble and hurls it before his feet. He would like to pause for a moment so fair [verweilen: a reference to Goethe’s Faust], to awaken the dead and to piece together what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise, it has caught itself up in his wings and is so strong that the Angel can no longer close them. The storm drives him irresistibly into the future, to which his back is turned, while the rubble-heap before him grows sky-high. That which we call progress, is this storm." Benjamin's vision of progress as one huge catastrophic evert seems so prescient now, with the pandemic raging and computer models predicting a horrifying, climate changed future.... Our idea of progress must change. The books I've been reading have had an influence as well. They have illuminated the lineage of colonial slavery up to our present version of neoliberal capitalism, showing how it can never be anything but a system of institutional racism...my reading list: How to Be an Anticapitalist in the 21st Century by Erik Olin Wright Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler Dark Ecology by Timothy Morton A History of the World in Seven Cheap Things by Raj Patel and Jason W. Moore Staying with the Trouble by Donna J. Haraway</image:caption>

      <image:title>performances, installations, and proposals - Performing Media Festival 20, Jacob's Escalator</image:title>
      <image:caption>This is a direct capture of my audio/video performance at the Performing Media Festival 2020 at Indiana University, South Bend in February. Huge thanks to Eric Souther and Ryan Olivier for putting a great festival together! The title Jacob's Escalator is an obvious riff on the biblical tale, Jacob's Ladder. This video essay attempts to reveal a more modern and therefore easier path between the physical and spiritual. But though the path is mechanized, it's not without it's own difficulties...a stray flip-flop can jamb it...and who wants to step onto an escalator that has no end in sight? But perhaps these modern means of conveyance can take us to a place that wasn't originally intended... Extensive field recordings of the Chicago transit system form the core sounds and imagery of this piece.</image:caption>

This is one of my first attempts at establishing a video feedback environment large enough for people to perform in. The video was recorded by one of two Canon feedback cameras that were aimed at the projection screen. There were two other projectors throwing the same image to either side of the one you see. The performance took place on Dec 10 2017 at Shapeshifters Cinema in Oakland CA. We plan on doing a second performance in Berkeley, early in 2018 after working it up through more rehearsals. This is all live video with no effects or prerecorded loops used. Two rotating cameras are fed back through three flat screens and projected with three projectors mounted on their sides. Many thanks to SF Cinematheque and Krowswork for the use of their projectors! The projected image was approximately 22' wide by 9' high. My assistant, Michael Brown helped with the candle ritual and the placement of Sung Kim's matryoshka dolls. <image:title>performances, installations, and proposals - Window Proposal 2014</image:title>
      <image:caption>Storefront Window or Gallery Installation Proposal Installation to include the following elements: Multipul video screens and /or video projectors. Multiple closed circuit video cameras, (at least 4). Microprocessor switching devices to route the closed circuit camera signals to different screens at different times. Motorized, motion controlled devices, (robotics) that will change the view/ perspective of some of the cameras. Mannequins, props and models, (some also motorized), that will interact with the cameras, screens and each other. Design: My goal is to create an environment where the viewer is constantly trying to identify what perspective or viewpoint they are being shown. Imagine a street intersection where cars and pedestrians are going in many different directions at once. All of them are traveling with video cameras who's signals are shown randomly on a group of several video monitors. The effect of looking at the monitors would be to realize several relative viewpoints simultaneously. And there would be instances when two cameras would cross paths and record each other recording...Some of the cameras in the installation will at times be directed at the viewers outside on the street, and at other times the video cameras will be directed at the video screens themselves creating multiples of the same image, (video feedback). Please see documentation of my work for examples of video feedback and robotics at www.youngkit.com. Logistics: The robotics will be completed in 4 months time. The installation process will take three full days. The installation will be maintenance free except for turning it on and off. It will not be able to run continuously for weeks on end. Therefor, it should only be run when someone is at the location and is responsible for turning it on and off. I am available to do this on a daily basis, and to trouble shoot if problems arise. If the installation were to stay up for more that a week, it would be interesting to change some of the props and camera viewpoints throughout the run. I own all of the equipment thus far but would look for funding to purchase two large LCD screens or projectors. Thank you for your consideration. <image:title>performances, installations, and proposals - Artists and Models proposal, page1</image:title>
      <image:caption>This proposal was conceived of and executed for the Artists And Models 2010 event, a fundraiser for Hallwalls, an exhibition space in Buffalo, N.Y. The work is titled Semipermiable Brain. Please look for documentation in my sculpture page. Excerpts from the written proposal are below. The proposed installation will include sculpture, video and kinetic art elements, and will have an audience participation dimension. It will require a 12' x 12' floor area as a footprint and need further space around it for the audience. The piece will be approximately 9' high and will need 1' of clearance above for assembly. A 10' high ceiling would suffice. These measurements are approximate, the piece can be modified to conform to a smaller space. The sculptural aspect of the piece will be an 8' high androgynous human head. It’s form and skin will be made of stretch-film packaging material which will be stretched over an armature made of recycled pipe and lumber. The stretch-film will be layered up thick enough to make it translucent so as to partially obscure the armature beneath. The translucency of the stretch-film skin will lend itself to back lighting and the display of images or found objects beneath it’s surface. The skin can also be drawn on from the exterior with sharpy marker to define and highlight it’s form.</image:caption>

      <image:title>performances, installations, and proposals - Artists and Models proposal, page 2</image:title>
      <image:caption>The video component of the piece will be shown through two 19" LCD TV screens that will form the eyes of the head. These screens will be mounted on axles so that they can rotate up to a speed of 100 RPM. This will make the images they transmit unable to be viewed in the usual TV sense, though the speed will be variable by the audience. As the RPM slows, the video images will become more coherent in the usual way. The content of the video will be different for each screen. One screen will be a collage of talking heads from news clips and TV commercials; the other will contain personal, intimate, and natural imagery,( nothing sexually graphic).</image:caption>

      <image:title>performances, installations, and proposals - Our Favorite Shows</image:title>
      <image:caption>Our Favorite Shows is a video performance piece that was staged for Hallwalls Artists And Models event, 2011. Excerpts for the proposal are below. Artists And Models Proposal '11: Our Favorite Shows , Performance of improvised video and sound. The video component of this piece will consist of three TV channels or shows that will be created using small props, toys, and materials. These scenes will be altered and manipulated throughout the performance to form narratives. The themes of the narratives will be: 1. News; with melting talking heads. 2. Action; chase, catastrophe, violence. 3. Sexy; advertisements and melting pop stars. The three scenes will be monitored with video cameras. Any one of the scenes will be projected on the wall behind the performance area where the scenes are being constructed. The scenes will be projected in random order as they reach the next point in their narrative. Some of the audience will be seated in front of the performance area,(the rest of the audience can stand). The audience will be able to view all the scenes as they are being developed as well as the projection of the chosen scene on the wall behind.</image:caption>

      <image:title>performances, installations, and proposals - Our Favorite Shows 2011</image:title>
      <image:caption>This is another, tighter distillation of the performance I gave at the Artists and Models event last year in Buffalo, N.Y. All the video imagery and sound was improvised during this one night event. Three old turntables played flee market records while driving mechanized stages upon which improvised scenes were enacted with thrift store dolls, figurines and props. It was conceived as a parody of the brain washing effect produced by most TV programming. This was a collaborative performance using the help of four guest VJs; Gary Sczerbaniewicz, Kate Gaudy, Angela Harris, and Tammy McGovern.</image:caption>

      <image:title>index - intro/statement</image:title>
      <image:caption>I am an interdisciplinary multimedia artist working in the combined genres of video, sound, kinetic sculpture, and performance. I also sketch, draw and journal to keep my eye- to- hand connection fresh, to catalogue ideas and images, and to keep some roots in traditional methods of production. In my practice of art, I hold several lines of inquiry in mind: Can the elements of a work of art be as diverse as possible while still allowing the piece to function as a whole? How do the mechanisms of our perception determine our reality? What is the relationship between art and reality, given the crucial role of perceptual mechanisms in producing what we take to be reality? How do our systems of belief and our media- saturated environment distort and transform what we perceive? What is the relationship between art and democracy, historically and currently? Why is the art world still so lacking in diversity and integration? What place can ethics and mindfulness have in the practice of art? My art is improvisational and explorative. I enjoy using compositional systems of loose structures that can respond to chance and chaos. I also appreciate the way that humor and play loosen our rigid reactions and assumptions, allowing us to re-experience reality in unexpected and liberating ways. Please use the images on this page as a index to the pages listed on left.</image:caption>
